ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮਨਾਏ ॥੭॥
gur sevaa sadaa sukh hai jis no hukam manaae ||7||
Serving the Guru, eternal peace is obtained, by those whom the Lord inspires to obey the Hukam of His Command. ||7||
ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੁਪਾ ਸਭ ਧਾਤੁ ਹੈ ਮਾਟੀ ਰਲਿ ਜਾਈ ॥
suinaa rupaa sabh dhaat hai maatee ral jaaee ||
Gold and silver, and all metals, mix with dust in the end
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਚਲਈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਬੂਝ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥
bin naavai naal na chalaee satigur boojh bujhaaee ||
Without the Name, nothing goes along with you; the True Guru has imparted this understanding.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੇ ਸਾਚੈ ਰਹੇ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੮॥੫॥
naanak naam rate se niramale saachai rahe samaaee ||8||5||
O Nanak, those who are attuned to the Naam are immaculate and pure; they remain merged in the Truth. ||8||5||
ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Maaroo, First Mehl:
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਭਇਆ ਰਹਣਾ ਨਹੀ ਧੁਰਿ ਫਾਟੇ ਚੀਰੈ ॥
hukam bhaiaa rahanaa nahee dhur phaate cheerai ||
The Order is issued, and he cannot remain; the permit to stay has been torn up.
ਏਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਅਵਗਣਿ ਬਾਧਿਆ ਸਹੁ ਦੇਹ ਸਰੀਰੈ ॥
ehu man avagan baadhiaa sahu deh sareerai ||
This mind is tied to its faults; it suffers terrible pain in its body.
ਪੂਰੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਬਖਸਾਈਅਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਗੁਨਹ ਫਕੀਰੈ ॥੧॥
poorai gur bakhasaaeeahi sabh gunah phakeerai ||1||
The Perfect Guru forgives all the mistakes of the beggar at His Door. ||1||
ਕਿਉ ਰਹੀਐ ਉਠਿ ਚਲਣਾ ਬੁਝੁ ਸਬਦ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
kiu raheeai uth chalanaa bujh sabad beechaaraa ||
How can he stay here? He must get up and depart. Contemplate the Word of the Shabad, and understand this.
ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਮੇਲਹਿ ਸੋ ਮਿਲੈ ਧੁਰਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jis too melahi so milai dhur hukam apaaraa ||1|| rahaau ||
He alone is united, whom You, O Lord, unite. Such is the Primal Command of the Infinite Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਉ ਤੂ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਤਿਉ ਰਹਾ ਜੋ ਦੇਹਿ ਸੁ ਖਾਉ ॥
jiu too raakhahi tiu rahaa jo dehi s khaau ||
As You keep me, I remain; whatever You give me, I eat.
ਜਿਉ ਤੂ ਚਲਾਵਹਿ ਤਿਉ ਚਲਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਉ ॥
jiu too chalaavahi tiu chalaa mukh a(n)mrit naau ||
As You lead me, I follow, with the Ambrosial Name in my mouth.
ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਮੇਲਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਚਾਉ ॥੨॥
mere thaakur hath vadiaaeeaa melahi man chaau ||2||
All glorious greatness rests in the hands of my Lord and Master; my mind yearns to unite with You. ||2||
ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿਆ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਸੋਈ ॥
keetaa kiaa saalaaheeai kar dekhai soee ||
Why should anyone praise any other created being? That Lord acts and sees.
ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ ਸੋ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਮੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
jin keeaa so man vasai mai avar na koee ||
The One who created me, abides within my mind; there is no other at all.
ਸੋ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਸਾਚੀ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥੩॥
so saachaa saalaaheeai saachee pat hoee ||3||
So praise that True Lord, and you shall be blessed with true honor. ||3||
ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਪੜਿ ਨ ਪਹੁਚਈ ਬਹੁ ਆਲ ਜੰਜਾਲਾ ॥
pa(n)dit paR na pahuchaee bahu aal ja(n)jaalaa ||
The Pandit, the religious scholar, reads, but does not reach the Lord; he is totally entangled in worldly affairs.
ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਦੁਇ ਸੰਗਮੇ ਖੁਧਿਆ ਜਮਕਾਲਾ ॥
paap pu(n)n dui sa(n)game khudhiaa jamakaalaa ||
He keeps the company of both virtue and vice, tormented by hunger and the Messenger of Death.
ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਭਉ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਪੂਰਾ ਰਖਵਾਲਾ ॥੪॥
vichhoRaa bhau veesarai pooraa rakhavaalaa ||4||
One who is protected by the Perfect Lord, forgets separation and fear. ||4||
ਜਿਨ ਕੀ ਲੇਖੈ ਪਤਿ ਪਵੈ ਸੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
jin kee lekhai pat pavai se poore bhaaee ||
They alone are perfect, O Siblings of Destiny, whose honor is certified.
ਪੂਰੇ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਤਿ ਹੈ ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
poore pooree mat hai sachee vadiaaee ||
Perfect is the intellect of the Perfect Lord. True is His glorious greatness.
ਦੇਦੇ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਲੈ ਲੈ ਥਕਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੫॥
dede tot na aavaee lai lai thak paaee ||5||
His gifts never run short, although those who receive may grow weary of receiving. ||5||
ਖਾਰ ਸਮੁਦ੍ਰੁ ਢੰਢੋਲੀਐ ਇਕੁ ਮਣੀਆ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
khaar samudr dha(n)dholeeai ik maneeaa paavai ||
Searching the salty sea, one finds the pearl.
ਦੁਇ ਦਿਨ ਚਾਰਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਾ ਮਾਟੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਖਾਵੈ ॥
dui din chaar suhaavanaa maatee tis khaavai ||
It looks beautiful for a few days, but in the end, it is eaten away by dust.
ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਸਤਿ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਦੇ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥੬॥
gur saagar sat seveeai de tot na aavai ||6||
If one serves the Guru, the ocean of Truth, the gifts one receives never run short. ||6||
ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵਨਿ ਸੇ ਊਜਲੇ ਸਭ ਮੈਲੁ ਭਰੀਜੈ ॥
mere prabh bhaavan se oojale sabh mail bhareejai ||
They alone are pure, who are pleasing to my God; all others are soiled with filth.
ਮੈਲਾ ਊਜਲੁ ਤਾ ਥੀਐ ਪਾਰਸ ਸੰਗਿ ਭੀਜੈ ॥
mailaa oojal taa theeai paaras sa(n)g bheejai ||
The filthy become pure, when they meet with the Guru, the Philosopher's Stone.
ਵੰਨੀ ਸਾਚੇ ਲਾਲ ਕੀ ਕਿਨਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੭॥
va(n)nee saache laal kee kin keemat keejai ||7||
Who can estimate the value of the color of the true jewel? ||7||
ਭੇਖੀ ਹਾਥ ਨ ਲਭਈ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਹੀ ਦਾਨੇ ॥
bhekhee haath na labhaee teerath nahee daane ||
Wearing religious robes, the Lord is not obtained, nor is He obtained by giving donations at sacred shrines of pilgrimage.
ਪੂਛਉ ਬੇਦ ਪੜੰਤਿਆ ਮੂਠੀ ਵਿਣੁ ਮਾਨੇ ॥
poochhau bed paRa(n)tiaa moothee vin maane ||
Go and ask the readers of the Vedas; without faith, the world is cheated.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਗਿਆਨੇ ॥੮॥੬॥
naanak keemat so kare pooraa gur giaane ||8||6||
O Nanak, he alone values the jewel, who is blessed with the spiritual wisdom of the Perfect Guru. ||8||6||
ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Maaroo, Fifth Mehl:
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਲਹਰਿ ਘਰੁ ਤਜਿ ਵਿਗੂਚੈ ਅਵਰਾ ਕੇ ਘਰ ਹੇਰੈ ॥
manamukh lahar ghar taj vigoochai avaraa ke ghar herai ||
The self-willed manmukh, in a fit of passion, abandons his home, and is ruined; then, he spies on the homes of others.
ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਧਰਮੁ ਗਵਾਏ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਨ ਭੇਟੈ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਘੂਮਨ ਘੇਰੈ ॥
grih dharam gavaae satigur na bhetai duramat ghooman gherai ||
He neglects his household duties, and does not meet with the True Guru; he is caught in the whirlpool of evil-mindedness.
ਦਿਸੰਤਰੁ ਭਵੈ ਪਾਠ ਪੜਿ ਥਾਕਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਹੋਇ ਵਧੇਰੈ ॥
disa(n)tar bhavai paath paR thaakaa trisanaa hoi vadherai ||
Wandering in foreign lands and reading scriptures, he grows weary, and his thirsty desires only increase.
ਕਾਚੀ ਪਿੰਡੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੈ ਉਦਰੁ ਭਰੈ ਜੈਸੇ ਢੋਰੈ ॥੧॥
kaachee pi(n)dee sabad na cheenai udar bharai jaise dhorai ||1||
His perishable body does not remember the Word of the Shabad; like a beast, he fills his belly. ||1||
ਬਾਬਾ ਐਸੀ ਰਵਤ ਰਵੈ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ॥
baabaa aisee ravat ravai sa(n)niaasee ||
O Baba, this is the way of life of the Sannyaasi, the renunciate.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur kai sabad ek liv laagee terai naam rate tripataasee ||1|| rahaau ||
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he is to enshrine love for the One Lord. Imbued with Your Name, Lord, he remains satisfied and fulfilled. ||1||Pause||
ਘੋਲੀ ਗੇਰੂ ਰੰਗੁ ਚੜਾਇਆ ਵਸਤ੍ਰ ਭੇਖ ਭੇਖਾਰੀ ॥
gholee geroo ra(n)g chaRaaiaa vasatr bhekh bhekhaaree ||
He dyes his robes with saffron dye, and wearing these robes, he goes out begging.
ਕਾਪੜ ਫਾਰਿ ਬਨਾਈ ਖਿੰਥਾ ਝੋਲੀ ਮਾਇਆਧਾਰੀ ॥
kaapaR phaar banaaee khi(n)thaa jholee maaiaadhaaree ||
Tearing his robes, he makes a patched coat, and puts the money in his wallet.
ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਮਾਗੈ ਜਗੁ ਪਰਬੋਧੈ ਮਨਿ ਅੰਧੈ ਪਤਿ ਹਾਰੀ ॥
ghar ghar maagai jag parabodhai man a(n)dhai pat haaree ||
From house to house he goes begging, and tries to teach the world; but his mind is blind, and so he loses his honor.
ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਣਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੈ ਜੂਐ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਾਰੀ ॥੨॥
bharam bhulaanaa sabad na cheenai jooai baajee haaree ||2||
He is deluded by doubt, and does not remember the Word of the Shabad. He loses his life in the gamble. ||2||
