ਸਦਾ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਕੇਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
sadaa kaaraj sach naam suhelaa bin sabadai kaaraj kehaa he ||7||
Through the True Name, one's actions are forever embellished. Without the Shabad, what can anyone do? ||7||
ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਹਸੈ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਰੋਵੈ ॥
khin mahi hasai khin mahi rovai ||
One instant, he laughs, and the next instant, he cries.
ਦੂਜੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
doojee duramat kaaraj na hovai ||
Because of duality and evil-mindedness, his affairs are not resolved.
ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ਕਰਤੈ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਏ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਚਲਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
sa(n)jog vijog karatai likh paae kirat na chalai chalaahaa he ||8||
Union and separation are pre-ordained by the Creator. Actions already committed cannot be taken back. ||8||
ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਏ ॥
jeevan mukat gurasabad kamaae ||
One who lives the Word of the Guru's Shabad becomes Jivan Mukta - liberated while yet alive.
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਏ ॥
har siu sad hee rahai samaae ||
He remains forever immersed in the Lord.
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹਉਮੈ ਰੋਗੁ ਨ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
gur kirapaa te milai vadiaaee haumai rog na taahaa he ||9||
By Guru's Grace, one is blessed with glorious greatness; he is not afflicted by the disease of egotism. ||9||
ਰਸ ਕਸ ਖਾਏ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਵਧਾਏ ॥
ras kas khaae pi(n)d vadhaae ||
Eating tasty delicacies, he fattens up his body
ਭੇਖ ਕਰੈ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਕਮਾਏ ॥
bhekh karai gurasabad na kamaae ||
and wears religious robes, but he does not live to the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰੋਗੁ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਭਾਰੀ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
a(n)tar rog mahaa dukh bhaaree bisataa maahi samaahaa he ||10||
Deep with the nucleus of his being is the great disease; he suffers terrible pain, and eventually sinks into the manure. ||10||
ਬੇਦ ਪੜਹਿ ਪੜਿ ਬਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ॥
bed paRahi paR baad vakhaanahi ||
He reads and studies the Vedas, and argues about them;
ਘਟ ਮਹਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ॥
ghat mahi braham tis sabad na pachhaanahi ||
God is within his own heart, but he does not recognize the Word of the Shabad.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਤਤੁ ਬਿਲੋਵੈ ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
guramukh hovai s tat bilovai rasanaa har ras taahaa he ||11||
One who becomes Gurmukh churns the essence of reality; his tongue savors the sublime essence of the Lord. ||11||
ਘਰਿ ਵਥੁ ਛੋਡਹਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਧਾਵਹਿ ॥
ghar vath chhodahi baahar dhaavahi ||
Those who forsake the object within their own hearts, wander outside.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧੇ ਸਾਦੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
manamukh a(n)dhe saad na paavahi ||
The blind, self-willed manmukhs do not taste the flavor of God.
ਅਨ ਰਸ ਰਾਤੀ ਰਸਨਾ ਫੀਕੀ ਬੋਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
an ras raatee rasanaa pheekee bole har ras mool na taahaa he ||12||
Imbued with the taste of another, their tongues speak tasteless, insipid words. They never taste the sublime essence of the Lord. ||12||
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੇਹੀ ਭਰਮੁ ਭਤਾਰੋ ॥
manamukh dehee bharam bhataaro ||
The self-willed manmukh has doubt as his spouse.
ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਰੈ ਨਿਤ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੋ ॥
duramat marai nit hoi khuaaro ||
He dies of evil-mindedness, and suffers forever.
ਕਾਮਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧਿ ਮਨੁ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਇਆ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
kaam krodh man doojai laaiaa supanai sukh na taahaa he ||13||
His mind is attached to sexual desire, anger and duality, and he does not find peace, even in dreams. ||13||
ਕੰਚਨ ਦੇਹੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਭਤਾਰੋ ॥
ka(n)chan dehee sabad bhataaro ||
The body becomes golden, with the Word of the Shabad as its spouse.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭੋਗ ਭੋਗੇ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪਿਆਰੋ ॥
anadin bhog bhoge har siu piaaro ||
Night and day, enjoy the enjoyments, and be in love with the Lord.
ਮਹਲਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਗੈਰ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਏ ਭਾਣਾ ਬੁਝਿ ਸਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
mahalaa a(n)dar gair mahal paae bhaanaa bujh samaahaa he ||14||
Deep within the mansion of the self, one finds the Lord, who transcends this mansion. Realizing His Will, we merge in Him. ||14||
ਆਪੇ ਦੇਵੈ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰਾ ॥
aape devai devanahaaraa ||
The Great Giver Himself gives.
ਤਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਨਹੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਕਾ ਚਾਰਾ ॥
tis aagai nahee kisai kaa chaaraa ||
No one has any power to stand against Him.
ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਤਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਥਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
aape bakhase sabad milaae tis daa sabad athaahaa he ||15||
He Himself forgives, and unites us with the Shabad; The Word of His Shabad is unfathomable. ||15||
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਹੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਕੇਰਾ ॥
jeeu pi(n)d sabh hai tis keraa ||
Body and soul, all belong to Him.
ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥
sachaa saahib thaakur meraa ||
The True Lord is my only Lord and Master.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੁ ਜਾਪਿ ਸਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੫॥੧੪॥
naanak gurabaanee har paaiaa har jap jaap samaahaa he ||16||5||14||
O Nanak, through the Word of the Guru's Bani, I have found the Lord. Chanting the Lord's Chant, I merge in Him. ||16||5||14||

Maaroo, Third Mehl:
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਦ ਬੇਦ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
guramukh naad bed beechaar ||
The Gurmukh contemplates the sound current of the Naad instead of the Vedas.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਆਪਾਰੁ ॥
guramukh giaan dhiaan aapaar ||
The Gurmukh attains infinite spiritual wisdom and meditation.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਾਰ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧॥
guramukh kaar kare prabh bhaavai guramukh pooraa paaidaa ||1||
The Gurmukh acts in harmony with God's Will; the Gurmukh finds perfection. ||1||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਨੂਆ ਉਲਟਿ ਪਰਾਵੈ ॥
guramukh manooaa ulat paraavai ||
The mind of the Gurmukh turns away from the world.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਦੁ ਵਜਾਵੈ ॥
guramukh baanee naad vajaavai ||
The Gurmukh vibrates the Naad, the sound current of the Guru's Bani.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੨॥
guramukh sach rate bairaagee nij ghar vaasaa paaidaa ||2||
The Gurmukh, attuned to the Truth, remains detached, and dwells in the home of the self deep within. ||2||
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਾਖੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਭਾਖੀ ॥
gur kee saakhee a(n)mrit bhaakhee ||
I speak the Ambrosial Teachings of the Guru.
ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਸਚੁ ਸੁਭਾਖੀ ॥
sachai sabade sach subhaakhee ||
I lovingly chant the Truth, through the True Word of the Shabad.
ਸਦਾ ਸਚਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਮਨੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਚੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੩॥
sadaa sach ra(n)g raataa man meraa sache sach samaaidaa ||3||
My mind remains forever imbued with the Love of the True Lord. I am immersed in the Truest of the True. ||3||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਤ ਸਰਿ ਨਾਵੈ ॥
guramukh man niramal sat sar naavai ||
Immaculate and pure is the mind of the Gurmukh, who bathes in the Pool of Truth.
ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
mail na laagai sach samaavai ||
No filth attaches to him; he merges in the True Lord.
ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਸਚੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਦਾ ॥੪॥
sacho sach kamaavai sad hee sachee bhagat driRaaidaa ||4||
He truly practices Truth forever; true devotion is implanted within him. ||4||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚੁ ਬੈਣੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚੁ ਨੈਣੀ ॥
guramukh sach bainee guramukh sach nainee ||
True is the speech of the Gurmukh; true are the eyes of the Gurmukh.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਕਰਣੀ ॥
guramukh sach kamaavai karanee ||
The Gurmukh practices and lives the Truth.
ਸਦ ਹੀ ਸਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਅਵਰਾ ਸਚੁ ਕਹਾਇਦਾ ॥੫॥
sad hee sach kahai din raatee avaraa sach kahaaidaa ||5||
He speaks the Truth forever, day and night, and inspires others to speak the Truth. ||5||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚੀ ਊਤਮ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
guramukh sachee ootam baanee ||
True and exalted is the speech of the Gurmukh.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥
guramukh sacho sach vakhaanee ||
The Gurmukh speaks Truth, only Truth.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਦ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸਚੋ ਸਚਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਇਦਾ ॥੬॥
guramukh sad sevahi sacho sachaa guramukh sabad sunaaidaa ||6||
The Gurmukh serves the Truest of the True forever; the Gurmukh proclaims the Word of the Shabad. ||6||
