ਰਾਗੁ ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੯ ॥

Raag Gauree, Ninth Mehl:
ਸਾਧੋ ਮਨ ਕਾ ਮਾਨੁ ਤਿਆਗਉ ॥
saadho man kaa maan tiaagau ||
Holy Saadhus: forsake the pride of your mind.
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਦੁਰਜਨ ਕੀ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਭਾਗਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kaam krodh sa(n)gat durajan kee taa te ahinis bhaagau ||1|| rahaau ||
Sexual desire, anger and the company of evil people - run away from them, day and night. ||1||Pause||
ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੋਨੋ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨੈ ਅਉਰੁ ਮਾਨੁ ਅਪਮਾਨਾ ॥
sukh dukh dono sam kar jaanai aur maan apamaanaa ||
One who knows that pain and pleasure are both the same, and honor and dishonor as well,
ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਤੇ ਰਹੈ ਅਤੀਤਾ ਤਿਨਿ ਜਗਿ ਤਤੁ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥੧॥
harakh sog te rahai ateetaa tin jag tat pachhaanaa ||1||
who remains detached from joy and sorrow, realizes the true essence in the world. ||1||
ਉਸਤਤਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਦੋਊ ਤਿਆਗੈ ਖੋਜੈ ਪਦੁ ਨਿਰਬਾਨਾ ॥
usatat ni(n)daa dooo tiaagai khojai pad nirabaanaa ||
Renounce both praise and blame; seek instead the state of Nirvaanaa.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਖੇਲੁ ਕਠਨੁ ਹੈ ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਨਾ ॥੨॥੧॥
jan naanak ihu khel kathan hai kinahoo(n) guramukh jaanaa ||2||1||
O servant Nanak, this is such a difficult game; only a few Gurmukhs understand it! ||2||1||

Gauree, Ninth Mehl:
ਸਾਧੋ ਰਚਨਾ ਰਾਮ ਬਨਾਈ ॥
saadho rachanaa raam banaaee ||
Holy Saadhus: the Lord fashioned the creation.
ਇਕਿ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਇਕ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਅਚਰਜੁ ਲਖਿਓ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ik binasai ik asathir maanai acharaj lakhio na jaaee ||1|| rahaau ||
One person passes away, and another thinks that he will live forever - this is a wonder beyond understanding! ||1||Pause||
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਮੋਹ ਬਸਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਬਿਸਰਾਈ ॥
kaam krodh moh bas praanee har moorat bisaraaee ||
The mortal beings are held in the power of sexual desire, anger and emotional attachment; they have forgotten the Lord, the Immortal Form.
ਝੂਠਾ ਤਨੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨਿਓ ਜਿਉ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਰੈਨਾਈ ॥੧॥
jhoothaa tan saachaa kar maanio jiu supanaa rainaaee ||1||
The body is false, but they believe it to be true; it is like a dream in the night. ||1||
ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਸਗਲ ਬਿਨਾਸੈ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਦਰ ਕੀ ਛਾਈ ॥
jo deesai so sagal binaasai jiu baadar kee chhaaee ||
Whatever is seen, shall all pass away, like the shadow of a cloud.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਗੁ ਜਾਨਿਓ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਰਹਿਓ ਰਾਮ ਸਰਨਾਈ ॥੨॥੨॥
jan naanak jag jaanio mithiaa rahio raam saranaaee ||2||2||
O servant Nanak, one who knows the world to be unreal, dwells in the Sanctuary of the Lord. ||2||2||

Gauree, Ninth Mehl:
ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਆਵੈ ॥
praanee kau har jas man nahee aavai ||
The Praise of the Lord does not come to dwell in the minds of the mortal beings.
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਮਗਨੁ ਰਹੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੈ ਕਹੁ ਕੈਸੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ahinis magan rahai maaiaa mai kahu kaise gun gaavai ||1|| rahaau ||
Day and night, they remain engrossed in Maya. Tell me, how can they sing God's Glories? ||1||Pause||
ਪੂਤ ਮੀਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਸਿਉ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਆਪੁ ਬੰਧਾਵੈ ॥
poot meet maaiaa mamataa siu ih bidh aap ba(n)dhaavai ||
In this way, they bind themselves to children, friends, Maya and possessiveness.
ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਜਿਉ ਝੂਠੋ ਇਹੁ ਜਗ ਦੇਖਿ ਤਾਸਿ ਉਠਿ ਧਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
mrig trisanaa jiu jhootho ihu jag dekh taas uth dhaavai ||1||
Like the deer's delusion, this world is false; and yet, beholding it, they chase after it. ||1||
ਭੁਗਤਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਾ ਕਾਰਨੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਮੂੜ ਤਾਹਿ ਬਿਸਰਾਵੈ ॥
bhugat mukat kaa kaaran suaamee mooR taahi bisaraavai ||
Our Lord and Master is the source of pleasures and liberation; and yet, the fool forgets Him.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੋਟਨ ਮੈ ਕੋਊ ਭਜਨੁ ਰਾਮ ਕੋ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੨॥੩॥
jan naanak kotan mai kooo bhajan raam ko paavai ||2||3||
O servant Nanak, among millions, there is scarcely anyone who attains the Lord's meditation. ||2||3||

Gauree, Ninth Mehl:
ਸਾਧੋ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਗਹਿਓ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
saadho ihu man gahio na jaaee ||
Holy Saadhus: this mind cannot be restrained.
ਚੰਚਲ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਸਤੁ ਹੈ ਯਾ ਤੇ ਥਿਰੁ ਨ ਰਹਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
cha(n)chal trisanaa sa(n)g basat hai yaa te thir na rahaaee ||1|| rahaau ||
Fickle desires dwell with it, and so it cannot remain steady. ||1||Pause||
ਕਠਨ ਕਰੋਧ ਘਟ ਹੀ ਕੇ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਜਿਹ ਸੁਧਿ ਸਭ ਬਿਸਰਾਈ ॥
kathan karodh ghat hee ke bheetar jih sudh sabh bisaraaee ||
The heart is filled with anger and violence, which cause all sense to be forgotten.
ਰਤਨੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਸਭ ਕੋ ਹਿਰਿ ਲੀਨਾ ਤਾ ਸਿਉ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਬਸਾਈ ॥੧॥
ratan giaan sabh ko hir leenaa taa siu kachh na basaaee ||1||
The jewel of spiritual wisdom has been taken away from everyone; nothing can withstand it. ||1||
ਜੋਗੀ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਤ ਸਭਿ ਹਾਰੇ ਗੁਨੀ ਰਹੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਈ ॥
jogee jatan karat sabh haare gunee rahe gun gaaee ||
The Yogis have tried everything and failed; the virtuous have grown weary of singing God's Glories.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਭਏ ਦਇਆਲਾ ਤਉ ਸਭ ਬਿਧਿ ਬਨਿ ਆਈ ॥੨॥੪॥
jan naanak har bhae daiaalaa tau sabh bidh ban aaee ||2||4||
O servant Nanak, when the Lord becomes merciful, then every effort is successful. ||2||4||

ਸਾਧੋ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਉ ॥
saadho gobi(n)d ke gun gaavau ||
Holy Saadhus: sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord of the Universe.
ਮਾਨਸ ਜਨਮੁ ਅਮੋਲਕੁ ਪਾਇਓ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਕਾਹਿ ਗਵਾਵਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
maanas janam amolak paaio birathaa kaahi gavaavau ||1|| rahaau ||
You have obtained the priceless jewel of this human life; why are you uselessly wasting it? ||1||Pause||
ਪਤਿਤ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਦੀਨ ਬੰਧ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਨਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਤੁਮ ਆਵਉ ॥
patit puneet deen ba(n)dh har saran taahi tum aavau ||
He is the Purifier of sinners, the Friend of the poor. Come, and enter the Lord's Sanctuary.
ਗਜ ਕੋ ਤ੍ਰਾਸੁ ਮਿਟਿਓ ਜਿਹ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਤੁਮ ਕਾਹੇ ਬਿਸਰਾਵਉ ॥੧॥
gaj ko traas mitio jih simarat tum kaahe bisaraavau ||1||
Remembering Him, the elephant's fear was removed; so why do you forget Him? ||1||
ਤਜਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨ ਮੋਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਫੁਨਿ ਭਜਨ ਰਾਮ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਵਉ ॥
taj abhimaan moh maaiaa phun bhajan raam chit laavau ||
Renounce your egotistical pride and your emotional attachment to Maya; focus your consciousness on the Lord's meditation.
ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੯ ॥

Gauree, Ninth Mehl:
ਕੋਊ ਮਾਈ ਭੂਲਿਓ ਮਨੁ ਸਮਝਾਵੈ ॥
kooo maaee bhoolio man samajhaavai ||
O mother, if only someone would instruct my wayward mind.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹਤ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪੰਥ ਇਹੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਤੁਮ ਪਾਵਉ ॥੨॥੫॥
naanak kahat mukat pa(n)th ihu guramukh hoi tum paavau ||2||5||
Says Nanak, this is the path to liberation. Become Gurmukh, and attain it. ||2||5||
