ਗਿਆਨੁ ਸ੍ਰੇਸਟ ਊਤਮ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ॥
giaan sresat ootam isanaan ||
The most sublime wisdom and purifying baths;
ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਕਮਲ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸ ॥
chaar padaarath kamal pragaas ||
the four cardinal blessings, the opening of the heart-lotus;
ਸਭ ਕੈ ਮਧਿ ਸਗਲ ਤੇ ਉਦਾਸ ॥
sabh kai madh sagal te udaas ||
in the midst of all, and yet detached from all;
ਸੁੰਦਰੁ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਤਤ ਕਾ ਬੇਤਾ ॥
su(n)dar chatur tat kaa betaa ||
beauty, intelligence, and the realization of reality;
ਸਮਦਰਸੀ ਏਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੇਤਾ ॥
samadarasee ek drisatetaa ||
to look impartially upon all, and to see only the One
ਇਹ ਫਲ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਭਨੇ ॥
ih phal tis jan kai mukh bhane ||
- these blessings come to one who,
ਗੁਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਬਚਨ ਮਨਿ ਸੁਨੇ ॥੬॥
gur naanak naam bachan man sune ||6||
through Guru Nanak, chants the Naam with his mouth, and hears the Word with his ears. ||6||
ਇਹੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਜਪੈ ਮਨਿ ਕੋਇ ॥
ihu nidhaan japai man koi ||
One who chants this treasure in his mind
ਸਭ ਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
sabh jug mahi taa kee gat hoi ||
in every age, he attains salvation.
ਗੁਣ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਾਮ ਧੁਨਿ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
gun gobi(n)d naam dhun baanee ||
In it is the Glory of God, the Naam, the chanting of Gurbani.
ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੇਦ ਬਖਾਣੀ ॥
simrit saasatr bed bakhaanee ||
The Simritees, the Shaastras and the Vedas speak of it.
ਸਗਲ ਮਤਾਂਤ ਕੇਵਲ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ॥
sagal mataa(n)t keval har naam ||
The essence of all religion is the Lord's Name alone.
ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਭਗਤ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮ ॥
gobi(n)d bhagat kai man bisraam ||
It abides in the minds of the devotees of God.
ਕੋਟਿ ਅਪ੍ਰਾਧ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਟੈ ॥
kot apraadh saadhasa(n)g mitai ||
Millions of sins are erased, in the Company of the Holy.
ਸੰਤ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਤੇ ਜਮ ਤੇ ਛੁਟੈ ॥
sa(n)t kripaa te jam te chhutai ||
By the Grace of the Saint, one escapes the Messenger of Death.
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਕਰਮ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
jaa kai masatak karam prabh paae ||
Those, who have such pre-ordained destiny on their foreheads,
ਸਾਧ ਸਰਣਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਆਏ ॥੭॥
saadh saran naanak te aae ||7||
O Nanak, enter the Sanctuary of the Saints. ||7||
ਜਿਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਬਸੈ ਸੁਨੈ ਲਾਇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥
jis man basai sunai laai preet ||
One, within whose mind it abides, and who listens to it with love
ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਆਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਚੀਤਿ ॥
tis jan aavai har prabh cheet ||
that humble person consciously remembers the Lord God.
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ॥
janam maran taa kaa dookh nivaarai ||
The pains of birth and death are removed.
ਦੁਲਭ ਦੇਹ ਤਤਕਾਲ ਉਧਾਰੈ ॥
dulabh deh tatakaal udhaarai ||
The human body, so difficult to obtain, is instantly redeemed.
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸੋਭਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਬਾਨੀ ॥
niramal sobhaa a(n)mrit taa kee baanee ||
Spotlessly pure is his reputation, and ambrosial is his speech.
ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਨੀ ॥
ek naam man maahi samaanee ||
The One Name permeates his mind.
ਦੂਖ ਰੋਗ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਭੈ ਭਰਮ ॥
dookh rog binase bhai bharam ||
Sorrow, sickness, fear and doubt depart.
ਸਾਧ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਕਰਮ ॥
saadh naam niramal taa ke karam ||
He is called a Holy person; his actions are immaculate and pure.
ਸਭ ਤੇ ਊਚ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਬਨੀ ॥
sabh te ooch taa kee sobhaa banee ||
His glory becomes the highest of all.
ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹ ਗੁਣਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਖਮਨੀ ॥੮॥੨੪॥
naanak ih gun naam sukhamanee ||8||24||
O Nanak, by these Glorious Virtues, this is named Sukhmani, Peace of mind. ||8||24||

ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਮਹੀਅਲਿ ਪੂਰਿਆ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰੁ ॥
jal thal maheeal pooriaa suaamee sirajanahaar ||
The Creator Lord and Master is pervading the water, the land, and the sky.
ਅਨਿਕ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
anik bhaa(n)t hoi pasariaa naanak eka(n)kaar ||1||
In so many ways, the One, the Universal Creator has diffused Himself, O Nanak. ||1||

Pauree:
ਏਕਮ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕਰਉ ਬੰਦਨਾ ਧਿਆਇ ॥
ekam eka(n)kaar prabh karau ba(n)danaa dhiaai ||
The first day of the lunar cycle: Bow in humility and meditate on the One, the Universal Creator Lord God.
ਗੁਣ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੁਪਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਰਨਿ ਪਰਉ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ॥
gun gobi(n)d gupaal prabh saran parau har raai ||
Praise God, the Lord of the Universe, the Sustainer of the World; seek the Sanctuary of the Lord, our King.
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਆਸ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਸੁਖ ਜਾ ਤੇ ਸਭੁ ਕਛੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
taa kee aas kaliaan sukh jaa te sabh kachh hoi ||
Place your hopes in Him, for salvation and peace; all things come from Him.
ਚਾਰਿ ਕੁੰਟ ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿਓ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
chaar ku(n)t dah dis bhramio tis bin avar na koi ||
I wandered around the four corners of the world and in the ten directions, but I saw nothing except Him.
ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸੁਨੇ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਕਰਉ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
bed puraan simrit sune bahu bidh karau beechaar ||
I listened to the Vedas, the Puraanas and the Simritees, and I pondered over them in so many ways.
ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਨ ਭੈ ਹਰਨ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਗਰ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ॥
patit udhaaran bhai haran sukh saagar nira(n)kaar ||
The Saving Grace of sinners, the Destroyer of fear, the Ocean of peace, the Formless Lord.
ਦਾਤਾ ਭੁਗਤਾ ਦੇਨਹਾਰੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
daataa bhugataa denahaar tis bin avar na jaai ||
The Great Giver, the Enjoyer, the Bestower - there is no place at all without Him.
ਜੋ ਚਾਹਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਮਿਲੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ॥੧॥
jo chaahahi soee milai naanak har gun gaai ||1||
You shall obtain all that you desire, O Nanak, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||1||
ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਨੀਤ ॥
gobi(n)d jas gaaeeai har neet ||
Sing the Praises of the Lord, the Lord of the Universe, each and every day.
ਮਿਲਿ ਭਜੀਐ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੀਤ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
mil bhajeeai saadhasa(n)g mere meet ||1|| rahaau ||
Join the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, and vibrate, meditate on Him, O my friend. ||1||Pause||

ਕਰਉ ਬੰਦਨਾ ਅਨਿਕ ਵਾਰ ਸਰਨਿ ਪਰਉ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ॥
karau ba(n)danaa anik vaar saran parau har raai ||
Bow in humility to the Lord, over and over again, and enter the Sanctuary of the Lord, our King.
ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਕਟੀਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਦੁਤੀਆ ਭਾਉ ਮਿਟਾਇ ॥੨॥
bhram kateeai naanak saadhasa(n)g duteeaa bhaau mitaai ||2||
Doubt is eradicated, O Nanak, in the Company of the Holy, and the love of duality is eliminated. ||2||

ਦੁਤੀਆ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੂਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਿ ਨੀਤ ॥
duteeaa duramat door kar gur sevaa kar neet ||
The second day of the lunar cycle: Get rid of your evil-mindedness, and serve the Guru continually.
ਰਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਬਸੈ ਤਜਿ ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੀਤ ॥
raam ratan man tan basai taj kaam krodh lobh meet ||
The jewel of the Lord's Name shall come to dwell in your mind and body, when you renounce sexual desire, anger and greed, O my friend.
ਮਰਣੁ ਮਿਟੈ ਜੀਵਨੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਬਿਨਸਹਿ ਸਗਲ ਕਲੇਸ ॥
maran mitai jeevan milai binasahi sagal kales ||
Conquer death and obtain eternal life; all your troubles will depart.
ਆਪੁ ਤਜਹੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਭਜਹੁ ਭਾਉ ਭਗਤਿ ਪਰਵੇਸ ॥
aap tajahu gobi(n)d bhajahu bhaau bhagat paraves ||
Renounce your self-conceit and vibrate upon the Lord of the Universe; loving devotion to Him shall permeate your being.
