ਅੰਤਿ ਸੰਗ ਕਾਹੂ ਨਹੀ ਦੀਨਾ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਆਪੁ ਬੰਧਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
a(n)t sa(n)g kaahoo nahee deenaa birathaa aap ba(n)dhaaiaa ||1||
In the end, nothing shall go along with you; you have entrapped yourself in vain. ||1||
ਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਭਜਿਓ ਨ ਗੁਰ ਜਨੁ ਸੇਵਿਓ ਨਹ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਕਛੁ ਗਿਆਨਾ ॥
naa har bhajio na gur jan sevio nah upajio kachh giaanaa ||
You have not meditated or vibrated upon the Lord; you have not served the Guru, or His humble servants; spiritual wisdom has not welled up within you.
ਘਟ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਤੈ ਖੋਜਤ ਉਦਿਆਨਾ ॥੨॥
ghat hee maahi nira(n)jan terai tai khojat udiaanaa ||2||
The Immaculate Lord is within your heart, and yet you search for Him in the wilderness. ||2||
ਬਹੁਤੁ ਜਨਮ ਭਰਮਤ ਤੈ ਹਾਰਿਓ ਅਸਥਿਰ ਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
bahut janam bharamat tai haario asathir mat nahee paaee ||
You have wandered through many many births; you are exhausted but have still not found a way out of this endless cycle.
ਮਾਨਸ ਦੇਹ ਪਾਇ ਪਦ ਹਰਿ ਭਜੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਾਤ ਬਤਾਈ ॥੩॥੩॥
maanas deh paai pad har bhaj naanak baat bataaee ||3||3||
Now that you have obtained this human body, meditate on the Lord's Feet; Nanak advises with this advice. ||3||3||
ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੯ ॥

Sorat'h, Ninth Mehl:
ਮਨ ਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਸਰਨਿ ਬਿਚਾਰੋ ॥
man re prabh kee saran bichaaro ||
O mind, contemplate the Sanctuary of God.
ਜਿਹ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਗਨਕਾ ਸੀ ਉਧਰੀ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਜਸੁ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੋ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jih simarat ganakaa see udharee taa ko jas ur dhaaro ||1|| rahaau ||
Meditating on Him in remembrance, Ganika the prostitute was saved; enshrine His Praises within your heart. ||1||Pause||
ਅਟਲ ਭਇਓ ਧ੍ਰੂਅ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਅਰੁ ਨਿਰਭੈ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
atal bhaio dhroo jaa kai simaran ar nirabhai pad paaiaa ||
Meditating on Him in remembrance, Dhroo became immortal, and obtained the state of fearlessness.
ਦੁਖ ਹਰਤਾ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੋ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤੈ ਕਾਹੇ ਬਿਸਰਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
dukh harataa ih bidh ko suaamee tai kaahe bisaraaiaa ||1||
The Lord and Master removes suffering in this way - why have you forgotten Him? ||1||
ਜਬ ਹੀ ਸਰਨਿ ਗਹੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਿਧਿ ਗਜ ਗਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਛੂਟਾ ॥
jab hee saran gahee kirapaa nidh gaj garaah te chhootaa ||
As soon as the elephant took to the protective Sanctuary of the Lord, the ocean of mercy, he escaped from the crocodile.
ਮਹਮਾ ਨਾਮ ਕਹਾ ਲਉ ਬਰਨਉ ਰਾਮ ਕਹਤ ਬੰਧਨ ਤਿਹ ਤੂਟਾ ॥੨॥
mahamaa naam kahaa lau baranau raam kahat ba(n)dhan tih tootaa ||2||
How much can I describe the Glorious Praises of the Naam? Whoever chants the Lord's Name, his bonds are broken. ||2||
ਅਜਾਮਲੁ ਪਾਪੀ ਜਗੁ ਜਾਨੇ ਨਿਮਖ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ॥
ajaamal paapee jag jaane nimakh maahi nisataaraa ||
Ajaamal, known throughout the world as a sinner, was redeemed in an instant.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹਤ ਚੇਤ ਚਿੰਤਾਮਨਿ ਤੈ ਭੀ ਉਤਰਹਿ ਪਾਰਾ ॥੩॥੪॥
naanak kahat chet chi(n)taaman tai bhee utarahi paaraa ||3||4||
Says Nanak, remember the Chintaamani, the jewel which fulfills all desires, and you too shall be carried across and saved. ||3||4||

Sorat'h, Ninth Mehl:
ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਕਉਨੁ ਉਪਾਉ ਕਰੈ ॥
praanee kaun upaau karai ||
What efforts should the mortal make,
ਜਾ ਤੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਰਾਮ ਕੀ ਪਾਵੈ ਜਮ ਕੋ ਤ੍ਰਾਸੁ ਹਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaa te bhagat raam kee paavai jam ko traas harai ||1|| rahaau ||
to attain devotional worship of the Lord, and eradicate the fear of death? ||1||Pause||
ਕਉਨੁ ਕਰਮ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਕਹੁ ਕੈਸੀ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਉਨੁ ਫੁਨਿ ਕਰਈ ॥
kaun karam bidiaa kahu kaisee dharam kaun phun karaee ||
Which actions, what sort of knowledge, and what religion - what Dharma should one practice?
ਕਉਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰੈ ਭਵ ਸਾਗਰ ਕਉ ਤਰਈ ॥੧॥
kaun naam gur jaa kai simarai bhav saagar kau taraee ||1||
What Name of the Guru should one remember in meditation, to cross over the terrifying world-ocean? ||1||
ਕਲ ਮੈ ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਿਧਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਜਪੈ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
kal mai ek naam kirapaa nidh jaahi japai gat paavai ||
In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, the Name of the One Lord is the treasure of mercy; chanting it, one obtains salvation.
ਅਉਰ ਧਰਮ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਸਮ ਨਾਹਨਿ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਬੇਦੁ ਬਤਾਵੈ ॥੨॥
aur dharam taa kai sam naahan ih bidh bed bataavai ||2||
No other religion is comparable to this; so speak the Vedas. ||2||
ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਰਹਤ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਰਲੇਪੀ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਕਹਤ ਗੁਸਾਈ ॥
sukh dukh rahat sadaa niralepee jaa kau kahat gusaaee ||
He is beyond pain and pleasure, forever unattached; He is called the Lord of the world.
ਸੋ ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਬਸੈ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਪਨਿ ਨਿਆਈ ॥੩॥੫॥
so tum hee mahi basai nira(n)tar naanak darapan niaaee ||3||5||
He dwells deep within your inner self, O Nanak, like the image in a mirror. ||3||5||

Sorat'h, Ninth Mehl:
ਮਾਈ ਮੈ ਕਿਹਿ ਬਿਧਿ ਲਖਉ ਗੁਸਾਈ ॥
maaee mai kihi bidh lakhau gusaaee ||
O mother, how can I see the Lord of the world?
ਮਹਾ ਮੋਹ ਅਗਿਆਨਿ ਤਿਮਰਿ ਮੋ ਮਨੁ ਰਹਿਓ ਉਰਝਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
mahaa moh agiaan timar mo man rahio urajhaaee ||1|| rahaau ||
In the utter darkness of emotional attachment and spiritual ignorance, my mind remains entangled. ||1||Pause||
ਸਗਲ ਜਨਮ ਭਰਮ ਹੀ ਭਰਮ ਖੋਇਓ ਨਹ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
sagal janam bharam hee bharam khoio nah asathir mat paaee ||
Deluded by doubt, I have wasted my whole life; I have not obtained a stable intellect.
ਬਿਖਿਆਸਕਤ ਰਹਿਓ ਨਿਸ ਬਾਸੁਰ ਨਹ ਛੂਟੀ ਅਧਮਾਈ ॥੧॥
bikhiaasakat rahio nis baasur nah chhootee adhamaaee ||1||
I remain under the influence of corrupting sins, night and day, and I have not renounced wickedness. ||1||
ਸਾਧਸੰਗੁ ਕਬਹੂ ਨਹੀ ਕੀਨਾ ਨਹ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਗਾਈ ॥
saadhasa(n)g kabahoo nahee keenaa nah keerat prabh gaaee ||
I never joined the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, and I did not sing the Kirtan of God's Praises.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਮੈ ਨਾਹਿ ਕੋਊ ਗੁਨੁ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਸਰਨਾਈ ॥੨॥੬॥
jan naanak mai naahi kooo gun raakh lehu saranaaee ||2||6||
O servant Nanak, I have no virtues at all; keep me in Your Sanctuary, Lord. ||2||6||
ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੯ ॥

Sorat'h, Ninth Mehl:
ਮਾਈ ਮਨੁ ਮੇਰੋ ਬਸਿ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
maaee man mero bas naahi ||
O mother, my mind is out of control.
ਨਿਸ ਬਾਸੁਰ ਬਿਖਿਅਨ ਕਉ ਧਾਵਤ ਕਿਹਿ ਬਿਧਿ ਰੋਕਉ ਤਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
nis baasur bikhian kau dhaavat kihi bidh rokau taahi ||1|| rahaau ||
Night and day, it runs after sin and corruption. How can I restrain it? ||1||Pause||
ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਕੇ ਮਤ ਸੁਨਿ ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਹੀਏ ਬਸਾਵੈ ॥
bed puraan simrit ke mat sun nimakh na heee basaavai ||
He listens to the teachings of the Vedas, the Puraanas and the Simritees, but he does not enshrine them in his heart, even for an instant.
ਪਰ ਧਨ ਪਰ ਦਾਰਾ ਸਿਉ ਰਚਿਓ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਿਰਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
par dhan par daaraa siu rachio birathaa janam siraavai ||1||
Engrossed in the wealth and women of others, his life passes away uselessly. ||1||
ਮਦਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ਭਇਓ ਬਾਵਰੋ ਸੂਝਤ ਨਹ ਕਛੁ ਗਿਆਨਾ ॥
mad maaiaa kai bhaio baavaro soojhat nah kachh giaanaa ||
He has gone insane with the wine of Maya, and does not understand even a bit of spiritual wisdom.
ਘਟ ਹੀ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਬਸਤ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਮਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ॥੨॥
ghat hee bheetar basat nira(n)jan taa ko maram na jaanaa ||2||
Deep within his heart, the Immaculate Lord dwells, but he does not know this secret. ||2||
