ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਜਗੁ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਫਿਰੈ ਮਨਮੁਖਾ ਨੋ ਗਈ ਖਾਇ ॥
bin sabadai jag dukheeaa phirai manamukhaa no gaee khaai ||
Without the Shabad, the world wanders lost in pain. The self-willed manmukh is consumed.
ਸਬਦੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਸਬਦੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੪॥
sabade naam dhiaaeeai sabade sach samaai ||4||
Through the Shabad, meditate on the Naam; through the Shabad, you shall merge in Truth. ||4||
ਮਾਇਆ ਭੂਲੇ ਸਿਧ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
maaiaa bhoole sidh phirahi samaadh na lagai subhaai ||
The Siddhas wander around, deluded by Maya; they are not absorbed in the Samaadhi of the Lord's Sublime Love.
ਤੀਨੇ ਲੋਅ ਵਿਆਪਤ ਹੈ ਅਧਿਕ ਰਹੀ ਲਪਟਾਇ ॥
teene lo viaapat hai adhik rahee lapataai ||
The three worlds are permeated by Maya; they are totally covered by it.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥੫॥
bin gur mukat na paaeeai naa dubidhaa maaiaa jaai ||5||
Without the Guru, liberation is not attained, and the double-mindedness of Maya does not go away. ||5||
ਮਾਇਆ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਖੀਐ ਕਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
maaiaa kis no aakheeai kiaa maaiaa karam kamaai ||
What is called Maya? What does Maya do?
ਦੁਖਿ ਸੁਖਿ ਏਹੁ ਜੀਉ ਬਧੁ ਹੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
dukh sukh ehu jeeu badh hai haumai karam kamaai ||
These beings are bound by pleasure and pain; they do their deeds in egotism.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਚੂਕਈ ਨਾ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੬॥
bin sabadai bharam na chookaee naa vichahu haumai jaai ||6||
Without the Shabad, doubt is not dispelled, and egotism is not eliminated from within. ||6||
ਬਿਨੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
bin preetee bhagat na hovaee bin sabadai thaai na paai ||
Without love, there is no devotional worship. Without the Shabad, no one finds acceptance.
ਸਬਦੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੀਐ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
sabade haumai maareeai maaiaa kaa bhram jaai ||
Through the Shabad, egotism is conquered and subdued, and the illusion of Maya is dispelled.
ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥੭॥
naam padaarath paaeeai guramukh sahaj subhaai ||7||
The Gurmukh obtains the Treasure of the Naam with intuitive ease. ||7||
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਗੁਣ ਨ ਜਾਪਨੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
bin gur gun na jaapanee bin gun bhagat na hoi ||
Without the Guru, one's virtues do not shine forth; without virtue, there is no devotional worship.
ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
bhagat vachhal har man vasiaa sahaj miliaa prabh soi ||
The Lord is the Lover of His devotees; He abides within their minds. They meet that God with intuitive ease.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦੇ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਕਰਮਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੮॥੪॥੨੧॥
naanak sabade har saalaaheeai karam paraapat hoi ||8||4||21||
O Nanak, through the Shabad, praise the Lord. By His Grace, He is obtained. ||8||4||21||

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਮੇਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਕੀਨਾ ਆਪੇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ॥
maaiaa mohu merai prabh keenaa aape bharam bhulaae ||
Emotional attachment to Maya is created by my God; He Himself misleads us through illusion and doubt.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਹਿ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
manamukh karam karahi nahee boojhahi birathaa janam gavaae ||
The self-willed manmukhs perform their actions, but they do not understand; they waste away their lives in vain.
ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਇਸੁ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਕਰਮਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਏ ॥੧॥
gurabaanee is jag mahi chaanan karam vasai man aae ||1||
Gurbani is the Light to illuminate this world; by His Grace, it comes to abide within the mind. ||1||
ਮਨ ਰੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
man re naam japahu sukh hoi ||
O mind, chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and find peace.
ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur pooraa saalaaheeai sahaj milai prabh soi ||1|| rahaau ||
Praising the Perfect Guru, you shall easily meet with that God. ||1||Pause||
ਭਰਮੁ ਗਇਆ ਭਉ ਭਾਗਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
bharam gaiaa bhau bhaagiaa har charanee chit laai ||
Doubt departs, and fear runs away, when you focus your consciousness on the Lord's Feet.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥
guramukh sabad kamaaeeai har vasai man aai ||
The Gurmukh practices the Shabad, and the Lord comes to dwell within the mind.
ਘਰਿ ਮਹਲਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਖਾਇ ॥੨॥
ghar mahal sach samaaeeai jamakaal na sakai khaai ||2||
In the mansion of the home within the self, we merge in Truth, and the Messenger of Death cannot devour us. ||2||
ਨਾਮਾ ਛੀਬਾ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਜੋੁਲਾਹਾ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
naamaa chheebaa kabeer joulaahaa poore gur te gat paaee ||
Naam Dayv the printer, and Kabeer the weaver, obtained salvation through the Perfect Guru.
ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕੇ ਬੇਤੇ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥
braham ke bete sabad pachhaanahi haumai jaat gavaaee ||
Those who know God and recognize His Shabad lose their ego and class consciousness.
ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਮੇਟੈ ਭਾਈ ॥੩॥
sur nar tin kee baanee gaavahi koi na metai bhaaee ||3||
Their Banis are sung by the angelic beings, and no one can erase them, O Siblings of Destiny! ||3||
ਦੈਤ ਪੁਤੁ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੰਜਮ ਨ ਪੜੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
dait put karam dharam kichh sa(n)jam na paRai doojaa bhaau na jaanai ||
The demon's son Prahlaad had not read about religious rituals or ceremonies, austerity or self-discipline; he did not know the love of duality.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟਿਐ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਆ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥
satigur bhetiai niramal hoaa anadin naam vakhaanai ||
Upon meeting with the True Guru, he became pure; night and day, he chanted the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਏਕੋ ਪੜੈ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਉ ਬੂਝੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ॥੪॥
eko paRai eko naau boojhai doojaa avar na jaanai ||4||
He read only of the One and he understood only the One Name; he knew no other at all. ||4||
ਖਟੁ ਦਰਸਨ ਜੋਗੀ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ॥
khat darasan jogee sa(n)niaasee bin gur bharam bhulaae ||
The followers of the six different life-styles and world-views, the Yogis and the Sanyaasees have gone astray in doubt without the Guru.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਤਾ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
satigur sevahi taa gat mit paavahi har jeeu ma(n)n vasaae ||
If they serve the True Guru, they find the state of salvation; they enshrine the Dear Lord within their minds.
ਸਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ਰਹਾਏ ॥੫॥
sachee baanee siu chit laagai aavan jaan rahaae ||5||
They focus their consciousness on the True Bani, and their comings and goings in reincarnation are over. ||5||
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਵਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ॥
pa(n)dit paR paR vaad vakhaanahi bin gur bharam bhulaae ||
The Pandits, the religious scholars, read and argue and stir up controversies, but without the Guru, they are deluded by doubt.
ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਫੇਰੁ ਪਇਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥
lakh chauraaseeh pher paiaa bin sabadai mukat na paae ||
They wander around the cycle of 8.4 million reincarnations; without the Shabad, they do not attain liberation.
ਜਾ ਨਾਉ ਚੇਤੈ ਤਾ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਏ ਜਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥੬॥
jaa naau chetai taa gat paae jaa satigur mel milaae ||6||
But when they remember the Name, then they attain the state of salvation, when the True Guru unites them in Union. ||6||
ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਉਪਜੈ ਜਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥
satasa(n)gat mahi naam har upajai jaa satigur milai subhaae ||
In the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, the Name of the Lord wells up, when the True Guru unites us in His Sublime Love.
